A single flower – the chrysanthemum – was Bairei’s subject in a woodblock-printed book entitled Bairei Kiku Hyakushu (i.e., One Hundred Varieties of Chrysanthemums by Bairei). The book’s three volumes were published between 1891 and 1896. Twenty-two pictures included in volume chi (i.e., earth) are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Some of these pictures provide a close-up view of a particular horticultural variety of chrysanthemum while in other pictures chrysanthemums are shown as part of a scene. Bairei drew the shapes of chrysanthemums and other objects accurately but colored them using only shades of grey or red as he did in other picture books.
